Round Table
“Public Artworks,
Public
Speaking”
2nd
May, 2012 at Polis
University, Tirana
In the frame of the project Revival
of City Square in Balkan Cities, we would like
to invite you
to the
Round Table #1 “Public Artworks, Public
Speaking”
The project ‘Revival of City Square in Balkan Cities’ started in January 2011, with the support of SCP for Western Balkans. The focus of the project are city squares; City squares (public squares) as prime open multi-functional public spaces. City squares are conceived as places/spaces for expressing
cultural, civil and social relations, focal points for cultural diversity and integration. City squares, as places for democratic and cultural expression in contemporary
cities are a vital stimulus to cultural entrepreneurship and development of the cities.
The way we look at city square
nowadays in the Balkans certainly is subject for understanding how these habitats are being transformed in functions and roles
for communities, or bringing a different culture compared to
the past.
In order to best capture the essence
of people’s needs, we started from
a questionnaire, targeting 4 cities involved in the project, namely Tirana, Durres (Albania), Kotor (Montenegro) and Skopje (Macedonia). Activities related to promote transformation of city squares into
new
vibrant, creative and liveable spaces will continue throughout 2012. In this Round Table we’re going to analyse the experiences born into this
and other projects and to discuss
how
to use artworks in order to transform urban city squares into vibrant communities. Art as a touching point, a
bridge between the today situation of public city squares and a future possible
transformation, starting from the today analysed
existing problems.
